Wife shocks husband with nearly $900K Virginia Lottery win

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — A Virginia Beach resident turned a routine Saturday into a life-changing moment after winning an $893,232 jackpot while playing the Virginia Lottery’s Bucks Triple Play online game.

Cheryl Nettingham was using the Virginia Lottery’s mobile app when she hit the top prize. She later shared the news with her husband, urging him to sit down before revealing the unexpected windfall.

Bucks Triple Play is one of many instant games available through the Virginia Lottery’s online platform. The odds of winning vary by game, and players must be at least 18 and physically located in Virginia to participate.

All Virginia Lottery profits support K-12 education, with Virginia Beach receiving more than $39.7 million in lottery funds last fiscal year. In total, the Lottery contributed over $934 million to Virginia’s public schools in Fiscal Year 2024.
