BROWNS MILLS, NJ – New Jersey is about to set a record on most tornadoes in a year after the National Weather Service confirmed two touchdowns on Thursday.
The first tornado touched down in the Browns Mills section of Pemberton Township in Burlington County. It occurred near the intersection of Ridge Road, Whites Bogs Road, and Range Road.
This tornado was rated an EF-1, with peak wind speeds estimated at 90 mph. It was on the ground for a brief period from 3:08 p.m. until 3:12 p.m., traveling about three-tenths of a mile and leaving a path 100 yards wide.
The second tornado struck in the area of Tomlin Drive and Hazel Court in East Greenwich Township in Gloucester County.
Also rated an EF-1, this twister had estimated peak wind speeds of 95 mph. It was on the ground for a mere two minutes from 2:08 p.m. until 2:10 p.m., covering a distance of about six-tenths of a mile and leaving a 70-yard-wide path.
In 1989, there were 18 tornadoes confirmed in New Jersey.
