Naomi Elkins to Appear for Pre-Trial Release Hearing in Ocean County

Ocean County, NJ – Naomi Elkins, 27, of Lakewood, is scheduled for a pre-trial release hearing today. Elkins faces charges of two counts of murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon following the deaths of her one- and three-year-old children on June 25.

The charges stem from an incident in which officers from the Lakewood Township Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting two children in cardiac arrest at Elkins’ residence. Upon arrival, first responders found the children unresponsive. Despite attempts to revive them, both children were pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation revealed that the one-year-old had been stabbed, and both children had been drowned.

Prosecutors are expected to argue against Elkins’ release, citing the severity of the charges and the nature of the alleged crimes. The defense is anticipated to request her release under supervision, pointing to her lack of prior criminal history and her legal team’s claims of mental health issues.

The judge’s decision on Elkins’ pre-trial release is awaited with significant interest due to the case’s tragic and sensitive nature.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer commended the efforts of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Lakewood Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit for their roles in the investigation.

The community remains deeply affected by the incident as the legal process unfolds.
