Utica woman armed with fork arrested for assault

UTICA, N.Y. — A 27-year-old woman was arrested on September 29 in connection with an assault in which two people were stabbed with a fork during an altercation on Hillcrest Avenue. The suspect, identified as Shamya Hammett, was charged with assault and weapon possession, the Utica Police Department announced.

The incident occurred on September 20, when officers were dispatched to 929 Hillcrest Avenue for an assault investigation. According to the police, two victims reported that an argument had broken out between one of the victims and an unknown female. When the second victim tried to intervene, the suspect attacked both individuals.

During the assault, Hammett allegedly brandished a fork and began swinging it at the victims, puncturing their faces and bodies. The suspect fled the scene before police arrived.

Following an investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division, Hammett was identified as the suspect. She has been charged with second-degree assault, attempted second-degree assault, and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
