ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, N.J. — Democrats made inroads in the traditionally Republican town of Atlantic Highlands, securing a narrow victory in a closely watched local election. The race saw Democratic candidates Jose E. Pujols and Brian Dougherty edging out their Republican opponents for seats on the Borough Council.
According to the latest vote tally, Dougherty led the field with 1,437 votes, capturing 26.72% of the total, while Pujols garnered 1,374 votes, securing 25.55%. The Republican candidates, Ellen O’Dwyer Woods and Brian Boms, received 1,297 votes (24.12%) and 1,263 votes, respectively, falling just short of the Democratic challengers.
The results mark a significant win for Democrats in Monmouth County, a region that typically leans Republican. The victory may signal shifting political dynamics in Atlantic Highlands, though analysts note that local factors often play a strong role in borough-level elections.
