Gunman arrested in fatal shooting of 16-year-old hockey player on i-55

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Police have made an arrest in the death of 16-year-old Colin Brown, who was fatally shot by a stray bullet while riding in an SUV with his father on Interstate 55 in St. Louis.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department announced Thursday that Garrett Jordan, 26, has been taken into custody in connection with the November 23 shooting. Authorities say Colin, a talented hockey player, was struck in the neck by gunfire while his father, retired Illinois State Police Lt. Col. Calvin Brown, was driving the family home after a game.

The shooting occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. near Loughborough Avenue on I-55. Calvin Brown continued driving to the area of 4th and Walnut, where police and paramedics met the vehicle. Colin was transported to the hospital in critical condition but passed away on Wednesday.

Homicide detectives investigating the case located evidence of gunfire in the southbound lanes of I-55 and have been analyzing new video footage while following up on numerous tips from the public.

“It is with a heavy heart I share that 16-year-old Colin Brown has died after being shot by a stray bullet Saturday night,” said Mitch McCoy, Director of Public Affairs for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. He added that Colin’s family donated his organs to patients in need, describing the gesture as “an example of the type of young man Colin was and the kind of family he grew up in.”

Police are continuing to urge residents near I-55 and Loughborough to review home security footage for any evidence related to the incident. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine Jordan’s involvement and any additional suspects.
