NEWARK, N.J. — The Newark Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect involved in the theft of a cell phone at Seabra’s Supermarket on August 18, 2024.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé, the incident occurred around 1 p.m. when the victim accidentally left her cell phone in a shopping basket after exiting the supermarket located in the 200 block of Lafayette Street. Surveillance video captured a male suspect taking the phone from the basket and placing it in his pocket.

The Newark Police Department has released an image of the suspect from the surveillance footage and is urging anyone with information that could help identify him to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Newark Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). All tips are confidential, and there may be a reward for information leading to an arrest.
