BERKELEY TWP-New Jersey Natural Gas announced their intent to raise their rates by 19%, but Berkeley Township Mayor Carmen F. Amato, Jr., today announced his strong opposition to the exorbitant increase that could leave New Jersey residents rubbing nickels together to make heat next year.
“As Yankee great Yogi Berra said: “It’s like déjà vu all over again.” Just three short years ago, New Jersey Natural Gas proposed a 24 percent increase in rates. To be back so soon for another large increase, is outrageous and totally unacceptable.” Mayor Amato said.
New Jersey Natural Gas proposes a 19 percent increase to a typical residential customer’s bill using 100 therms of natural gas a month, would see their bill increase from $101.89 to $121.27, for a monthly increase of $19.38 or 232.56 per year.
“The proposed increase would create an undue financial hardship to our young families and retirees. Especially our senior citizens who struggle on a daily basis to make ends meet. I am calling on the executives of NJNG to sharpen their pencils and re think this excessive and unreasonable increase.” Mayor Amato said.
