Working smoke alarms couldn’t save boy from fatal house fire
WICOMICO COUNTY, MD — An early morning house fire in Parsonsburg claimed the life of an 11-year-old boy Friday after flames tore through a home in the 31600 block of Zion Road, despite efforts by firefighters and family members to rescue him.
The fire erupted around 4:20 a.m., engulfing the single-family home before first responders arrived. Fire crews from the Parsonsburg Volunteer Fire Department and surrounding stations found the structure heavily involved when they reached the scene.
Three adults who managed to escape the blaze told arriving firefighters that a child was still trapped inside. Despite immediate rescue attempts, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene. His name and that of his family have not yet been released.
Preliminary findings from the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal indicate that working smoke alarms were present in the home at the time of the fire. Investigators believe the blaze started in the rear section of the residence, though the exact cause remains under active investigation.
Damage is estimated at $200,000 to the structure and $100,000 to the contents inside. The American Red Cross is currently assisting the displaced family members.
A joint investigation involving the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division is underway, which is standard protocol in any fatal residential fire.
