Cumberland man arrested after violent assault and attempt to dodge police with fake ID

Cumberland, MD – A 27-year-old man is behind bars after allegedly assaulting a woman early Sunday morning and then trying to trick police by giving false identification when officers tracked him down, according to the Cumberland Police Department.

The incident unfolded around 2:56 a.m. on August 31, when officers were called to a home in the 600 block of Columbia Avenue for a reported assault. The victim told police she had been attacked by Andrew Joseph Riggs, who fled the scene before officers arrived. Investigators noted visible injuries on the victim.

Police quickly canvassed the area and located Riggs near the intersection of Fairview Avenue and Franklin Street. When confronted, Riggs allegedly gave officers a false name in an effort to avoid arrest. He was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking.

Riggs is facing multiple charges, including first-degree assault, second-degree assault, obstructing and hindering, and providing false identification to avoid prosecution. He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and ordered held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center.
