Silver Spring man arrested after alleged attacks at seniors residence

Silver Spring man charged after alleged burglary and attempted sexual assault at senior living facility

Gaithersburg, MD — A night at a senior living community turned violent Wednesday when a man forced his way into a secured building, assaulted multiple elderly residents and fled before officers captured him nearby, Montgomery County police say.

Montgomery County Department of Police responded to a reported burglary at The Oaks at Four Corners in the 300 block of University Boulevard West at approximately 8:28 p.m. Wednesday. Investigators say 31-year-old Darrell Dwayne Cousar of Silver Spring forced entry by assaulting an elderly female resident, then began knocking on apartment doors. When a second elderly woman opened her door, officers allege Cousar assaulted her as well. A third resident who answered observed Cousar exposing himself before he grabbed her and attempted a sexual assault; the victim’s screams drew other residents, and Cousar fled as calls to 9-1-1 were placed.

Officers searched the area using the suspect description and shortly thereafter responded to a separate trespass call on the fourth floor of a building in the 10700 block of Columbia Pike. There, they located a man who matched the description and detained him. Victims identified Cousar during a show-up procedure, and he was taken into custody.

Police seized Cousar and transported him to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit. He has been charged with attempted second-degree rape, second-degree assault, third-degree burglary, third-degree sex offense, indecent exposure, and disorderly conduct. Cousar is being held without bond.

Investigators continue to develop the case. No additional information about the victims’ conditions was released. The department asked anyone with relevant information to contact the Montgomery County police.
