Fraud cases surge in Stafford County with fake emails, stolen identities, and vehicle scams
STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — A wave of fraud-related crimes was reported across Stafford County on Monday, with victims losing money and personal information in schemes involving impersonation, identity theft, and financial deception, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.
The first incident took place at Colonial Circuits Inc. on Warrenton Road around 9:22 a.m., when an employee reported receiving an email that appeared to come from a fellow staff member. The fraudulent message requested a change in direct deposit information. After a paycheck was deposited into the newly provided account, the company discovered the update was a scam.
Later that morning at 9:52 a.m., a resident on Greenridge Drive told Deputy F. C. O’Neill that someone had used his personal information to open a line of credit out of state, another case of identity theft tied to unknown suspects.
By 4:33 p.m., a third report came in from Le Way Drive, where Deputy L. T. Smith met with a victim who stated that someone had fraudulently purchased two vehicles using their personal information.
Authorities said all three incidents are under investigation and have not confirmed whether they are connected.
