Baltimore police investigate fatal 1 a.m. shooting near Russell Street
Baltimore, MD – One man is dead and another is recovering after a shooting in the early hours of Wednesday morning that began near Russell Street and ended with gunfire heard just blocks from M&T Bank Stadium, police said.
At approximately 1:33 a.m., officers patrolling the 700 block of Washington Boulevard heard multiple gunshots ring out. Within moments, a ShotSpotter alert signaled additional gunfire in the 800 block of West Cross Street. Responding officers located a 26-year-old male suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition but later died despite medical efforts.
Shortly after the initial response, a second victim—a 22-year-old male—arrived at a local hospital on his own, also suffering from gunshot wounds. His injuries are considered non-life-threatening, and he is in stable condition, according to officials.
A preliminary investigation indicates the actual shooting occurred in the 1500 block of Russell Street in Baltimore’s Southern District, just south of the stadium area. Police are working to piece together how the victims ended up in different locations and what led to the violence.
