Son found guilty in Christmas Eve pole saw murder of father in Boonton Township
Boonton Township, NJ – A Morris County jury delivered a guilty verdict Friday in the brutal Christmas Eve killing of a Boonton Township man, ruling that his son used a battery-powered pole saw to commit the fatal attack inside their shared home.
Kyle Meyer, 35, formerly of Boonton Township, was found guilty of first-degree murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the December 24, 2023, slaying of his 61-year-old father, Gregory Meyer.
The verdict came down on Friday following a seven-day trial presided over by Superior Court Judge Ralph E. Amirata. The court has scheduled sentencing for February 6. Meyer remains in custody until that date.
Authorities responded to a home on Old Denville Road at around 1:15 p.m. on Christmas Eve after an emergency call. Investigators found Gregory Meyer dead inside the residence. A postmortem examination later determined the cause of death to be exsanguination caused by multiple injuries, and ruled the manner of death to be homicide.
Investigators later identified Kyle Meyer, who lived with the victim, as the suspect in the case. He was arrested hours later around 9 p.m. in Paterson.
The murder weapon was identified as a battery-powered pole saw. The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office led the investigation alongside the Boonton Township Police Department, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, and the Paterson Police Department.
Prosecutors Tara Wang and Kyle Herda handled the case in court, securing a conviction after presenting forensic evidence and witness testimony.
