Retiree’s coffee break reveals $100K lottery win

Worcester County retiree wins $100K on final Holiday Raffle ticket bought at Ocean City store

BERLIN, MD – A retired federal employee from Worcester County is celebrating a $100,000 lottery win after checking his Holiday Raffle ticket over a cup of coffee and realizing he was holding one of the game’s top-prize winners.

The man, who resides on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, claimed his prize on Monday at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. He purchased the winning $20 ticket—number 186723—at the Food Lion on Stephen Decatur Highway in Berlin during the final days of the raffle in late December.

He said he was drawn to the game’s strong odds, noting the 1-in-237,206 chance of winning the $1 million top prize, as well as better odds for one of the 10 $100,000 prizes and three $50,000 prizes. While he didn’t walk away with the million, his ticket was among the 10 selected for a $100,000 prize.

He discovered his win on the morning of Jan. 3, the day after the Jan. 2 drawing, while casually checking his ticket during breakfast. After realizing the amount, he immediately shared the news with his wife.

In addition to the six-figure win, he also won $50 on another ticket. He told lottery officials he plans to place the prize money into savings and continue enjoying his retirement—and rounds of golf.

The Maryland Lottery’s Holiday Raffle ran from Nov. 3 through Jan. 1, offering a total of 10,000 prizes ranging from $50 to $1 million. Only 237,206 sequentially numbered tickets were sold statewide.

Winners have 182 days from the Jan. 2 drawing to claim their prizes.
