Phone sale turns into street robbery in DC online marketplace setup
WASHINGTON, DC – A planned phone sale through an online marketplace ended in a robbery last month when the buyer allegedly snatched the device and fled with the help of an accomplice. Now, one suspect is in custody.
The incident took place around 5:13 p.m. on Saturday, December 13, in the 3500 block of East Capitol Street NE. The victim had arranged to meet someone to sell a phone, but the transaction took a turn when the suspect allegedly grabbed the phone and ran. A second individual assisted in the getaway.
Following an investigation by detectives, 23-year-old Christopher Kincaid of Southeast DC was arrested and charged with robbery, officials announced Wednesday.
The second suspect has not been identified, and the case remains under investigation. Police have not confirmed whether the robbery was premeditated or if the suspects had communicated with the victim before the meeting using false identities.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
Officials continue to urge caution when meeting buyers or sellers from online marketplaces, recommending public and well-lit areas for such exchanges.
A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and indictment of others involved.
