A stolen vehicle report at Christiana Mall led to a confrontation that left a state trooper injured and a Newark woman facing multiple felony charges Wednesday evening. The incident unfolded after the stolen car was tracked to a nearby residential street, where troopers moved in to recover the vehicle.
NEWARK, DE – Delaware State Police arrested 36-year-old Rebecca Weatherly of Newark following a stolen vehicle investigation that began at Christiana Mall and ended with an alleged assault on a trooper. The incident occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, when troopers responded to a report of a stolen Toyota Camry at 350 Christiana Mall.
According to the preliminary investigation, the vehicle was stolen from the mall and later tracked to a residence on the unit block of Jamison Street. Troopers located the vehicle at that address and observed Weatherly entering it and removing personal belongings.
Trooper injured during attempted arrest
As troopers approached Weatherly and attempted to take her into custody, she allegedly resisted and struck one of the troopers. The trooper sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening. Weatherly was taken into custody at the scene without further incident.
During a subsequent search, troopers recovered the keys to the stolen Toyota Camry from Weatherly, according to authorities.
Charges and court proceedings
Weatherly was transported to Troop 6, where she was formally charged with multiple offenses. She was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on a $3,500 cash bond.
The charges include assault in the second degree for injuring a law enforcement officer, receiving stolen property valued over $1,500, and resisting arrest with force or violence. All three charges are classified as felonies.
