Quick thinking trio honored after saving bus driver during medical emergency
Verona, NY — A routine bus route turned into a life-threatening emergency when a driver suffered a medical crisis, prompting swift action from three individuals whose response is now being formally recognized.
The incident occurred around 12:25 p.m. January 5 on State Route 365 near the intersection of State Route 31 in the Town of Verona.
Authorities said bus operator Dina Johnson, a First Student employee, immediately took control of the moving school bus and safely brought it to a stop after the driver became incapacitated.
Bus monitor Kately Vasquez quickly assessed the driver’s condition and helped coordinate the emergency response.
During the incident, Johnson flagged down a passing motorist, identified as Stephen Dillon, who stopped to assist. Dillon and Vasquez then performed life-saving measures until first responders arrived.
Johnson also contacted 911 and remained engaged in managing the situation until emergency personnel took over.
Officials said the coordinated response helped ensure the safety of passengers and those on the roadway.
In recognition of their actions, Johnson, Vasquez, and Dillon were honored by New York State Police Troop D leadership, including Major Marc A. Barbera, Captain Paul T. Kuropatwinski, and Lieutenant Scott T. Kedenburg.
