Deputies say suspected drunk driver tried to flee traffic stop
STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — A trespassing complaint in Stafford County quickly escalated into a DUI arrest after deputies say a man wandered around a resident’s garage before trying to flee from responding deputies.
The incident unfolded Monday around 7:40 p.m. on Brent Point Road.
According to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called after a resident reported a suspicious man walking around their garage and driving through the property.
When Deputy Copeland arrived, the victim pointed out the suspect’s location.
Authorities said the suspect attempted to flee as deputies approached, leading to a traffic stop involving additional responding units.
Once deputies made contact with the driver, investigators said he showed multiple signs of impairment, including slurred speech, glassy eyes, unsteady balance and a strong odor of alcohol.
Deputies also discovered the man’s driver’s license had been suspended.
Field sobriety tests were administered before the suspect was taken into custody.
At the Sheriff’s Office, authorities said a breath test revealed the suspect’s blood alcohol concentration was above the legal limit.
The suspect was identified as 51-year-old Sherard Monk of Stafford.
He was charged with driving under the influence and driving without a license before being booked into the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
