Investigators swarm quiet Howell street after gunfire erupts just after midnight

FREEHOLD, N.J. — A quiet residential stretch of Howell was jolted awake early Sunday after gunfire erupted shortly after midnight, leaving an adult man wounded and triggering an active multi-agency investigation that remains ongoing.

At approximately 12:05 a.m., officers from the Howell Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting in the 200 block of Alexander Avenue, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago.

When first responders arrived at the scene, they found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency personnel transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where he is currently being treated for his injuries. Authorities have not released details on the victim’s condition beyond confirming he is receiving medical care.

The investigation is being led jointly by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau and the Howell Township Police Department. Detectives remained active in the area following the incident as they worked to gather evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Officials have not announced any arrests or identified a suspect as of Sunday.
