Resident says late-night encounter felt like a “horror movie” as suspect banged on doors and windows
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL – A late-night disturbance at a quiet New Smyrna Beach home escalated into a frightening encounter Monday when a 63-year-old man allegedly tried to force his way inside while making threats, leaving residents fearing for their lives.
Kevin John Moss is charged with attempted burglary of an occupied dwelling after the incident, which unfolded around 11:30 p.m. at a residence where homeowner Judy Lewis was inside with family. According to an arrest affidavit, Lewis was sitting in her living room when she heard someone attempting to open the front door.
Lewis asked her son to check, and he reportedly saw a shirtless man, later identified as Moss, outside making threats and mimicking a firearm with his hand.
Escalation caught on video
Authorities say Moss made a “finger gun” gesture and shouted “boom, boom, boom” while outside the home. A Ring doorbell camera also captured him allegedly yelling, “I’m going to shoot your a— up, motherf—er.”
After failing to get in through the front, Moss allegedly moved to the back of the home, where investigators say he began striking a sliding glass door with force. Lewis described the moment the situation intensified.
“He hit it so hard, a vase on the windowsill fell off into the sink,” Lewis said. “That suspense was like something out of a horror movie. He was out of control, he was crazed. At that point, I thought we were gonna die.”
Police say Moss also attempted to open a kitchen door during the incident.
Arrest and charges
The motive behind the alleged attack remains unclear, and authorities have not indicated any known connection between Moss and the residents.
Lewis called 911 as the situation unfolded. Officers responding to the scene located Moss nearby and took him into custody without further incident.
Moss was booked into the Volusia County Jail and later posted a $10,000 bond. Court records show his next scheduled court appearance is set for Aug. 18.
