Branch Avenue tobacco shop sold one of Maryland’s biggest winners from the $1.04 billion drawing
TEMPLE HILLS, MD – One Maryland Powerball player missed the $1.04 billion jackpot that rocked Wednesday night’s drawing, but a ticket purchased in Temple Hills still delivered a $50K prize while tens of thousands of other players across the state collected smaller wins.
The Maryland Lottery announced Thursday that the $50,000-winning ticket was purchased Wednesday at Discount Tobacco Zone, located at 3905 Branch Avenue in Temple Hills.
The winning Powerball numbers were 4, 26, 66, 67 and 69, with Powerball 9.
The Maryland Lottery did not identify the holder of the Temple Hills ticket.
The $50K ticket was the largest Powerball prize won in Maryland in Wednesday’s drawing.
Across the state, 66,224 tickets won prizes ranging from $4 to $50,000.
The jackpot itself went to a single ticket sold in Illinois.
After more than three months without a jackpot winner, ticket sales pushed the final annuity value to $1.04 billion, with a $450.5 million cash option before taxes.
The jackpot was the eighth-largest in Powerball history.
The run began after the previous jackpot was won May 2.
During the more than three months that followed, Maryland Powerball players collected more than $8.8 million in prizes.
That included 21 Maryland tickets worth at least $50,000.
Three tickets scored $1 million prizes during the run.
One was claimed by an anonymous Bowie State University graduate who used the nickname Powerball Bulldog after winning in the July 29 drawing.
Two other $1 million Maryland prizes remained unclaimed when the Lottery issued its announcement.
One came from an Aug. 10 ticket sold at Harvest Fare Supermarket in Fallston. The other was from the Aug. 1 drawing and was purchased at a 7-Eleven on Rhode Island Avenue in College Park.
Maryland also produced a $150,000 Powerball winner in Columbia and a $100,000 winner in Edgewood during the jackpot run.
Sixteen other $50,000 prizes were won on tickets sold in communities including Annapolis, Belcamp, Beltsville, Bethesda, Catonsville, Gaithersburg, Greenbelt, Hyattsville, North Beach, North East, Nottingham, Sykesville, Temple Hills, Waldorf and Wheaton.
Powerball sales in Maryland totaled more than $39.4 million from May 3 through Wednesday.
The Maryland Lottery said retailers received more than $2.2 million in commissions from those sales, while an estimated $9.8 million went to state programs and services.
