An Essex County judge sentenced a Newark man to 45 years in state prison after he was convicted of attacking a woman and sexually assaulting a child during a violent crime spree in Irvington.

NEWARK, N.J. – A Newark man has been sentenced to 45 years in New Jersey State Prison for physically assaulting a woman and sexually assaulting a minor during a series of violent attacks in Irvington, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Caream Davis, 46, was convicted on March 7 of two counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, first-degree kidnapping, second-degree aggravated assault, third-degree aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, criminal restraint and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Superior Court Judge Michael L. Ravin presided over both the trial and sentencing.

Violent attacks unfolded in Irvington

Prosecutors said the crimes occurred during the early morning hours of June 3, 2024, when Davis punched a 51-year-old woman from behind as she walked her dogs, knocking her to the ground before continuing the assault.

Authorities said Davis then walked several blocks away and encountered a minor who was walking a dog. According to prosecutors, Davis grabbed the child by the neck, strangled him, carried him beside a building, sexually assaulted him and threatened to kill him during the attack.

Arrested in Virginia after fleeing New Jersey

Following the attacks, prosecutors said Davis fled New Jersey and traveled to Richmond, Virginia. He was arrested on June 5, 2024, by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Richmond Police Department before being extradited back to New Jersey five days later.

Assistant Prosecutor Logan Teisch said, “We hope that this sentence provides the victims with some measure of closure and also allows them and their fellow residents of Irvington to feel much safer, knowing that this defendant is no longer in the community.”

Davis will begin serving the 45-year sentence on Aug. 19, 2028, after completing a separate sentence for a parole violation.
