Wicomico County deputies say nearly 476 grams of suspected marijuana and $12,141.75 were seized after an Aug. 28 traffic stop in Salisbury
SALISBURY, MD – A passenger bolted from a Salisbury traffic stop and allegedly ditched a large bag of suspected marijuana as he escaped, while deputies investigating the vehicle later seized nearly 476 grams of suspected marijuana and more than $12,000 in cash.
The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office disclosed details of the Aug. 28 traffic stop Wednesday, nearly two weeks after the encounter.
A Road Patrol deputy stopped a white 2023 Kia Sportage at approximately 9:33 p.m. after observing a traffic violation near East Lincoln Avenue and Spring Avenue, according to the sheriff’s office.
A registration check indicated that the Kia’s registration was suspended and subject to a Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration tag pick-up order.
As the vehicle stopped near Springfield Circle, a passenger in the front seat allegedly jumped out and ran.
The sheriff’s office said the fleeing passenger discarded a large bag containing suspected marijuana. Deputies were unable to locate the passenger.
The driver was identified as Tevin Ezra Mahammed Dupont, 32, of Salisbury.
Deputies detained Dupont and continued their investigation, allegedly finding suspected marijuana and a large amount of U.S. currency on him and inside the Kia.
A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of approximately 475.98 grams of suspected marijuana, $12,141.75 in cash, two cellphones and numerous empty packaging bags, according to the sheriff’s office.
Investigators said the packaging was consistent with bags used to package suspected marijuana.
The cash was allegedly found on Dupont and in multiple locations throughout the vehicle.
Investigators believe the money may represent proceeds from or have been used in connection with the unlawful distribution of controlled dangerous substances, according to the sheriff’s office.
Dupont was arrested and transported to the Wicomico County Detention Center for processing before being released to Central Booking.
The sheriff’s office did not specify the charges against Dupont in its Wednesday release.
The passenger who fled was not identified, and the sheriff’s office did not report an arrest in connection with that person.
Dupont is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
