BARNEGAT TOWNSHIP, NJ – A 67-year-old Barnegat Township man is accused of killing his wife inside their home Monday before stabbing himself in the chest, leaving officers to discover him wounded in a chair and his 69-year-old wife dead on the floor.

William Garvin was charged Tuesday with murder in connection with the death of his wife, Eileen Garvin, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.

The case began at approximately 6:30 p.m. Monday when Barnegat Township Police officers were called to a home on Windward Drive for a reported domestic violence incident.

Officers entered the residence and found William Garvin seated in a chair with a knife protruding from his chest, prosecutors said.

Eileen Garvin was found on the floor and was dead.

William Garvin was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where prosecutors said he was in stable condition.

An investigation involving the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Barnegat Township Police Department and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit led detectives to allege that William Garvin was responsible for his wife’s death.

Investigators also determined that William Garvin’s knife wound was self-inflicted, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Prosecutors did not disclose how Eileen Garvin was killed or provide information about what allegedly led to the fatal incident.

William Garvin was served with the murder charge by complaint-warrant while hospitalized.

Once released from the hospital, he is expected to be taken to the Ocean County Jail, where he will remain pending a detention hearing.

The Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office also assisted with the investigation.

The murder charge is an accusation. William Garvin is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
