BALTIMORE, MD – A Baltimore Army veteran who has played the Maryland Lottery since its early days bought a recently launched $50 scratch-off because major prizes were still available, then sat in his car outside the store and discovered he had just won $50,000.

The veteran claimed the third-tier prize Tuesday at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore after winning on the $5,000,000 LUXE scratch-off.

The winner, whose name was not released, purchased his tickets at Maryland Liquors, located at 6024 Liberty Road in Baltimore.

He told Lottery officials he was drawn to the $50 game because it was relatively new and still had top prizes available.

After buying his tickets, the veteran remained in his vehicle in the parking lot and scanned them.

One revealed the $50,000 prize.

The longtime player was left speechless by the result, according to the Maryland Lottery. He returned to Maryland Liquors to have the win verified before heading home.

Since discovering the prize, the veteran has kept a low profile and has not shared the news with anyone, according to the Lottery.

He already has plans for the money, however. The winner intends to pay off his car and use part of the remaining proceeds to get ahead on bills.

The $5,000,000 LUXE game went on sale Feb. 6.

Two of the game’s three original $5 million top prizes remain unclaimed, according to the Lottery. Seven of the original 10 prizes at the $200,000 level and eight of the 12 original $50,000 prizes also remained available when the Lottery announced the Baltimore veteran’s win.

The winner has been playing Maryland Lottery games since the 1970s.
