LAKEWOOD, NJ – The once serene and country-like road of Cross Street in Lakewood Township has turned into a thoroughfare of private schools in recent years. Some of the schools built there have been spacious brick-and-mortar palaces. Others turned old farm homes into schools or build trailer-based facilities to accommodate their students.
On Tuesday, one of those schools, operating out of a modular structure, caught fire and was damaged.
The incident happened in the early morning hours on 420 Cross Street. Upon their arrival, firefighters found heavy flames and smoke coming from the rear of the structure.
There were no students in the building, and no injuries were reported. The Lakewood Fire Department, along with firefighters from Jackson Township, Brick, and Point Pleasant Boro battled the fire for nearly two hours before bringing it under control.
By 5 am, the fire was declared fully extinguished by firefighters.
The fire is under investigation by the Ocean County Fire Marshal’s office.
The school is owned by Yeshiva Gedolah. The structure was designed by Mobilease, a Fredricktown, New Jersey modular space designer.
