RIKERS ISLAND, NY – A fire ignited by Marvens Thomas, a Rikers Island inmate, has led to 12 individuals suffering from smoke inhalation. On April 6, at 4:28 p.m., Thomas, who awaits trial for unrelated charges, reportedly started a fire in his cell, endangering dozens of lives.

Thomas allegedly used stripped headphone wires and batteries from a TV remote to ignite linens in his cell. The fire damaged nearby cells and caused a thick smoke condition, resulting in injuries to five correction officers and seven detainees.

Thomas faces charges including second-degree arson, third-degree arson, multiple counts of assault, and obstruction of governmental administration. His next court date is scheduled for September 13.
