Manhattan D.A. Bragg Endorses New York City Red Flag Law

by Adam Devine

MANHATTAN, NY – On Monday, District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. unveiled the filing of motions for three amicus briefs in the Appellate Division, supporting New York’s Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) or “Red Flag” law.

The law empowers law enforcement to petition courts to prevent an individual from legally buying or possessing firearms.

Amidst ongoing legal disputes over the statute, District Attorneys from Queens, Staten Island, and Westchester also joined in support.

Bragg emphasized the law’s critical role in preventing gun-related threats, while Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz highlighted its significance in countering gun violence.

The briefs underline the paramount importance of the ERPO statute in addressing imminent risks of gun violence and assert that the legislation serves the broader public interest.
