Senator Testa Raises Alarm Over New BPU President’s Energy Policy Views

September 14, 2023

TRENTON, NJ – Senator Michael Testa voiced skepticism over Governor Murphy’s recent appointment of Christine Guhl-Sadovy as the President of the Board of Public Utilities. Testa argues that the new appointment signals a radical shift in the state’s energy policy.

Testa previously grilled Guhl-Sadovy in her BPU Commissioner confirmation hearing. Back then, she downplayed concerns about the ecological impact of offshore wind projects. A new federal study, however, highlights potential risks to marine life from these projects.

Testa said Guhl-Sadovy seemed to have preconceived opinions about offshore wind energy and its effects on marine ecosystems. “Her stance on natural gas is equally concerning. Her ideas align with Governor Murphy’s plan to forcefully electrify the state by 2035, ignoring the diversified energy needs of New Jersey residents,” Testa stated.

Testa believes that the Murphy administration’s aggressive electrification goals are unrealistic and do not consider the energy requirements of the state’s populace.

“Guhl-Sadovy called the energy master plan visionary and has actively advanced these extreme policies. It’s troubling that someone so involved in shaping this approach will now lead the BPU,” said Testa.

Holly Schepisi, another critic of the appointment, also questioned the wisdom of selecting Guhl-Sadovy. “She was a controversial choice even for a commissioner position. Now she’s set to dictate the state’s energy agenda. Governor Murphy is clearly doubling down on a flawed strategy,” said Schepisi.
