Newburgh, NY – A Georgia man has been sentenced to a five-year prison term following his admission of possessing a significant quantity of cocaine.

Yesterday, 34-year-old Nicoy Murray of Decatur, Georgia, received a five-year prison sentence, which will be succeeded by five years of post-release supervision. This sentence was handed down in Orange County Court, where Murray previously pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Second Degree.

The charge stemmed from an incident on September 26, 2023, when New York State Police Troopers pulled over Murray’s vehicle on Interstate 84 in the Town of Newburgh for multiple vehicle and traffic law violations. Discovering Murray’s license was suspended, the vehicle was impounded. A routine inventory search of the vehicle later uncovered a kilogram of cocaine. Murray confessed during his November 15 plea hearing to possessing over four ounces of cocaine.

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler commended the New York State Police for their diligent work leading to Murray’s arrest and prosecution. “The disruption of the flow of narcotics into our communities starts with proactive policing,” Hoovler stated, emphasizing the importance of apprehending and penalizing individuals involved in the narcotics trade to deter future offenses.
