NEWARK, DE – Newark Police responded to Newark High School on April 9, following reports of a large altercation. School resource officers, alongside more than a dozen Newark Police Officers, University of Delaware Police Department officers, Christina School District Constables, and school staff, worked collaboratively to quell the disturbance.
The initial investigation revealed involvement from over 15 students in the primary altercation. Efforts to halt the chaos led to the emergence of several smaller disputes within the school’s hallways.
Six juveniles, encompassing both males and females aged 14 to 16, were detained in connection to the original brawl. While five were apprehended without further issues, one resisted arrest but was eventually subdued by Newark Police. The incident resulted in minor injuries to one police officer, who did not seek medical treatment.
The detained juveniles were charged with disorderly conduct at Newark Police headquarters. Additionally, one male faced charges for resisting arrest. They were all released to their guardians, pending future appearances in New Castle County Family Court.
Subsequently, another confrontation occurred during school dismissal, involving a 14-year-old female attempting to use pepper spray, inadvertently affecting a police officer. She, alongside another 15-year-old female suspect, was arrested and charged with offenses including offensive touching of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. Both were handed over to their guardians, with court dates pending.
These incidents remain under active investigation, with further arrests anticipated.
