WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two men were arrested early Tuesday morning following the theft of an ATM from a Northwest business and a police pursuit that spanned multiple jurisdictions, the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed.
Around 5:17 a.m. on March 25, Fourth District officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 5200 block of Georgia Avenue, Northwest. Investigators learned that multiple suspects had threatened an employee and used a chain to rip an ATM from outside the business before fleeing in a white Ford F-250.
Just 14 minutes later, Fifth District officers spotted the vehicle near New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road, Northeast. A pursuit was initiated and MPD’s helicopter, Falcon 1, provided aerial support as the suspects led police through parts of Maryland and Virginia.
The chase ended at approximately 6:49 a.m. in the 2300 block of Raynolds Place, Southeast. Two suspects fled on foot but were quickly apprehended by officers. The stolen ATM and vehicle were recovered at the scene.
Police arrested 33-year-old Justin Taylor of District Heights, Maryland, and 39-year-old Hosea Peterson of Southeast, D.C. Both face charges of Theft I, Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, and Felony Receiving Stolen Property. Peterson faces additional charges including Reckless Driving, Fleeing, and Assault on a Police Officer.
The truck used in the theft was reported stolen from Montgomery County, Maryland. Detectives are working with surrounding jurisdictions to investigate potential connections to other crimes.
