NEW YORK, NY – New York City Police officers from the 52nd precinct responded to a shooting that involved an infant girl on Wednesday.

At about 6:48 pm, police responded to a 9-1-1 call for a child shot at the corner of East 198th Street and Valentine Avenue in the Bronx. Police officers arrived at the scene within two minutes to find a mother holding her 11-month-old baby girl who suffered a gunshot wound to her left cheek. The police escorted the mother and baby to St. Barnabas Hospital.

Police said the shooting was the result of a foot chase between two unidentified men running eastbound on East 198th Street where one of the men fired two shots, striking the child inside the mother’s parked car.

The baby is currently in the hospital in critical, but stable condition.

“This is completely unacceptable in our city that an 11-month old baby was shot,” said NYPD Deputy Chief Timothy McCormack. “That birthday is going to be in a few days. You were here last night, with a police officer being shot in the street…this is unacceptable and it needs to stop.”
