Boston drug arrest: NEST officers seize 23 bags of crack in New Market Square

A mid-morning patrol in one of Boston’s most closely watched corridors led to a drug arrest after officers said they witnessed a suspected street-level transaction unfold in real time. The incident, which occurred Thursday in New Market Square, resulted in the recovery of multiple individually packaged bags of crack cocaine and cash.

BOSTON, MA – Around 10:20 a.m. Thursday, officers assigned to the citywide Neighborhood Engagement Safety Team (NEST) were operating in New Market Square as part of an ongoing initiative targeting quality of life issues in the area. During their patrol, officers observed a man remove an item from his rear pocket and hand it to two individuals, prompting further surveillance.

Police said continued observation revealed the suspect was carrying a large plastic bag concealed in the rear of his pants. Based on the interaction and behavior, officers believed a street-level drug transaction had taken place.

Investigation and arrest at District B-2

Officers stopped one of the individuals involved and placed him in handcuffs at the scene. According to the report, the suspect became uncooperative and refused to be searched. He was transported back to District B-2, where a search incident to arrest was conducted.

During that search, officers recovered the plastic bag seen earlier. Inside were two medium-sized plastic bags containing a total of 23 individually wrapped bags of crack cocaine—eight in one bag and fifteen in the other. Police also recovered $45 in U.S. currency.

The suspect was identified as Darmayne White, 51, of South Boston. He was placed under arrest and is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on a charge of possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance.

New Market Square enforcement focus

The arrest comes as part of continued enforcement efforts in the New Market Square area, where officers have been conducting targeted operations aimed at addressing persistent public safety and quality of life concerns. The Neighborhood Engagement Safety Team has been deployed citywide in similar initiatives, focusing on visible patrols and direct intervention in suspected criminal activity.
