Brooklyn gang ambush killer gets 22 years to life for shooting teen in the back

Prosecutors said the 18-year-old victim was lured to an East New York meeting spot before being chased down and fatally shot while trying to escape

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A Brooklyn man who prosecutors said took part in a planned ambush of an 18-year-old rival gang affiliate and then shot him in the back as he fled has been sentenced to 22 years to life in prison for murder.

Ricardo Dash, 25, of Bedford-Stuyvesant, was sentenced Friday by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice John Hecht after a jury convicted him of second-degree murder on Dec. 10, 2025, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.

The conviction stemmed from the May 10, 2021 killing of Shaheem Bascom, 18, who prosecutors said was lured to East New York through Facebook Messenger messages sent by a 16-year-old girl he knew.

According to trial testimony, Bascom agreed to meet the girl near 965 Hegeman Ave. in East New York. Prosecutors said the meeting was part of a plan involving Dash, members of the 8 Trey Crips gang, and others who intended to rob and assault Bascom because of his alleged affiliation with the rival Folk Nation gang.

Evidence presented at trial showed that after Bascom met the girl and another woman, Sarina Davis, the group began walking along Hegeman Avenue while Dash and others followed nearby.

When the group crossed Essex Street, co-defendant Deshawn Holder punched Bascom, prosecutors said. Bascom attempted to flee, but Dash chased after him and fired multiple shots, striking him in the back. Bascom later died from his injuries.

Prosecutors said Dash later mocked the killing in multiple Facebook posts. Following the shooting, he fled New York and remained a fugitive for seven months before being arrested in Henry County, Georgia, in December 2021 by members of the NYPD and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said the sentence holds Dash accountable for what prosecutors described as a planned attack on an unarmed teenager.

Holder previously pleaded guilty to second-degree gang assault and was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision. Davis pleaded guilty in July 2025 to second-degree attempted gang assault and was sentenced to six months in jail and five years of post-release supervision.

The case involving the 16-year-old girl was transferred to Family Court. Prosecutors said another suspect has not yet been apprehended.
