Queens, NY – A Brooklyn man set off a wave of panic in Whitestone on Friday morning when he allegedly tried to carjack several drivers, assaulted a livery worker, stole an SUV, and ultimately caused an NYPD detective to be wounded in a friendly fire shootout, prosecutors said.
Kevin Dubuisson, 28, now faces multiple felony charges after the chaos, which began at a Mobil gas station and ended with a detective shot in both the hand and leg during a standoff. The spree included three separate robbery attempts, two women injured by a vehicle collision, and a violent confrontation with police officers who mistakenly opened fire on one of their own.
According to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, Dubuisson was arraigned Friday on 18 charges including first-degree assault, robbery, grand larceny, and assault on a police officer. He was remanded by Judge Joanne B. Watters and is due back in court Tuesday. If convicted, he faces up to 32 years in prison.
The incident unfolded just before 9 a.m., when Dubuisson allegedly jumped into a white Hyundai Santa Fe at a gas station on Parsons Boulevard while the engine was running. A station employee tried to stop him, leading to a physical struggle. Video footage showed Dubuisson then motioning as if reaching for a weapon tucked in his waistband.
Witnesses reported that Dubuisson threatened a nearby woman by simulating a firearm and saying he would kill her. Minutes later, he approached a black Toyota Highlander, threatened the driver with what looked like a metal hook, and demanded the car. After the driver fled, Dubuisson chased him, pushed him, and took the keys.
While fleeing in the Toyota, Dubuisson allegedly reversed at high speed into a woman and her 87-year-old mother, knocking both to the ground and injuring the daughter, who suffered a fractured wrist.
Detective Corey Fisher, who was on duty in an unmarked vehicle nearby, saw the incident unfold and pursued the suspect. As Dubuisson tried to flee again, he slammed the stolen Toyota into the detective’s vehicle. Fisher and his partner exited with guns drawn, but as backup units arrived, a volley of gunfire broke out—hitting Fisher in the hand and leg.
The detective was hospitalized and treated for two gunshot wounds and a broken leg. The shots were determined to have come from fellow officers during the chaotic arrest.
Dubuisson was taken into custody at the scene and did not suffer gunshot injuries.
