Casual Powerball player wins $50K in Walkersville

Walkersville business owner wins $50,000 after missing Powerball jackpot by one number

Walkersville, MD – A business owner from Walkersville came within one number of the billion-dollar Powerball jackpot earlier this month but still walked away with a $50,000 prize.

The winning ticket, purchased at Walkersville Wine & Spirits, 130 Walkers Village Way, matched five of the six numbers drawn on September 6. The player visited Maryland Lottery headquarters on September 11 to claim the prize, accompanied by his wife.

The Walkersville resident is described as a casual lottery player who tends to buy tickets when jackpots grow large. After initially believing he did not win, his family encouraged him to double-check the numbers. That review revealed he was one number shy of the jackpot but eligible for a third-tier prize.

This was the first time the player had won a lottery prize. He credited his family’s persistence for leading him to claim the winnings.

According to Maryland Lottery officials, the man intends to save most of the money, take a vacation with his wife, and use part of the prize to support his children and grandchildren during the holiday season.

He also indicated he plans to continue playing the lottery in the future when jackpots reach higher amounts.
