Auto mechanic finally sees his special numbers hit in Maryland Lottery drawing
GAITHERSBURG, MD – A Gaithersburg auto mechanic spent his last $5 on Maryland Lottery tickets during a stop for a soda and watched the gamble turn into a $50,000 Pick 5 prize when a set of numbers special to him finally hit.
The Montgomery County man stopped at Goshen Beer & Wine on Aug. 3 and decided to purchase Pick 3 and Pick 5 tickets for that evening’s drawings.
He spent $1 on a straight Pick 5 wager using the numbers 8-4-8-9-6.
Special numbers hit straight
All five numbers came out in the exact order during that evening’s Pick 5 drawing, delivering the game’s $50,000 prize.
The winner did not realize what had happened until the following day while at work.
He checked the Maryland Lottery website and discovered that the numbers he regularly played had finally appeared.
It was the first time he had seen his chosen combination hit, he told Lottery officials.
Despite discovering the $50,000 win at work, the auto mechanic finished his shift before later telling his son and girlfriend.
$50K earmarked for home expenses
The Gaithersburg man claimed the prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on Tuesday.
He told Lottery officials he plans to put the $50,000 toward property taxes and home remodeling.
The winning ticket was purchased at Goshen Beer & Wine, located at 9150 Rothbury Drive in Montgomery Village.
The retailer will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the top-prize ticket.
