LAUREL, MD – A woman was carjacked at knifepoint Tuesday afternoon in Laurel after a man allegedly demanded her keys and drove away in her vehicle, but police soon recovered the abandoned vehicle and arrested a 33-year-old suspect nearby.
Anne Arundel County Police responded at approximately 3:25 p.m. Tuesday to the 3500 block of Laurel Fort Meade Road for a reported carjacking.
Woman confronted with knife
The victim told officers that a man approached her, produced a knife and demanded the keys to her vehicle.
She complied, and the suspect allegedly took the keys, entered her vehicle and drove east on Laurel Fort Meade Road.
Responding officers located the stolen vehicle a short distance away. It was unoccupied.
Police said a knife was visible inside the vehicle.
Suspect spotted nearby
Western District patrol officers continued searching the area and spotted a man walking in the 3300 block of Laurel Fort Meade Road.
Police said the suspect was positively identified and taken into custody.
Authorities identified the arrested man as Jose Raul Hernandez, 33, of Laurel.
Police said Hernandez was charged in connection with the carjacking but did not list the specific charges in the announcement.
The charges are accusations, and Hernandez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
