FREEHOLD, NJ – A life-saving intervention occurred at a DWI checkpoint last Friday night when a female driver was rescued from a potentially fatal overdose. The incident took place at the Asbury Park Circle, as announced by Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago and Allenhurst Police Chief Michael Schneider.
The adult driver entered the checkpoint and began interacting with a Monmouth County Sheriff’s Officer. She soon became disoriented and lost consciousness while her vehicle was still in gear. Quick action by additional officers at the scene prevented further danger by securing the vehicle and extracting the woman.
The emergency response included administering three doses of Narcan, which eventually led to signs of recovery in the driver. She was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by the Wanamassa First Aid Squad and later released.
The checkpoint was temporarily closed for about 30 minutes to manage the emergency. Prosecutor Santiago highlighted the critical role of the DWI checkpoint in preventing a more severe incident, crediting the swift actions of officers and medical personnel with saving the driver’s life and ensuring public safety. Chief Schneider reiterated the importance of such checkpoints in safeguarding the community.
