A Cumberland County Sheriff’s officer was suspended for 45 days after a bar fight that left patrons injured and resulted in a criminal conviction, according to state disciplinary records.
A Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office officer received major discipline after an off-duty altercation at a bar led to criminal charges, a court conviction, and departmental sanctions.
The disciplinary action was disclosed in New Jersey’s annual major discipline report for law enforcement agencies.
Fight resulted in injuries and property damage
According to disciplinary records, Officer Andy Garcia became involved in a bar fight on June 2, 2024.
Investigators determined the altercation caused bodily injury to patrons and resulted in damage to personal property.
“Officer Garcia engaged in a bar fight causing bodily injury to patrons and smashing the cellphone of one,” the disciplinary report states.
The department ultimately sustained a charge of conduct unbecoming.
Officer convicted of disorderly conduct
The incident resulted in criminal proceedings in Delaware.
According to the disciplinary report, Garcia was found guilty of disorderly conduct and sentenced to one year of probation.
As part of the court’s disposition, Garcia was ordered to complete an anger management course and pay restitution.
“Officer Garcia was found guilty of disorderly conduct and placed on probation for 1 year, to take an anger management course and pay restitution,” the report states.
Department imposed lengthy suspension
Following the investigation, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office imposed a 45-day suspension.
The report also indicates Garcia received a monetary penalty or loss of pay in connection with the disciplinary action.
Garcia was not terminated or demoted and remains employed by the agency.
Case included in statewide discipline report
The disciplinary action was published as part of New Jersey’s annual major discipline reporting system, which requires law enforcement agencies to publicly disclose serious disciplinary findings against officers.
