Suspect charged in Kenyon Street killing after missing toddler found safe
Washington, DC — A homicide investigation in Northwest D.C. has led to a murder charge after a woman was found shot to death and her missing toddler was later located safe inside a nearby residence.
The shooting occurred around 10:52 p.m. Tuesday in the 600 block of Kenyon Street Northwest. Officers responding to the scene found an adult woman in a rear alley suffering from gunshot wounds. She was unconscious and not breathing and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police identified the victim as 25-year-old Jamillah Gales, who had no fixed address.
Investigators determined Gales had been with her 2-year-old child shortly before the shooting. An AMBER Alert was issued early Wednesday as authorities searched for the child, who was later found unharmed at a nearby residence before 11:00 a.m. The alert was subsequently canceled.
Police said the suspect and another adult male were inside the residence where the child was found. Investigators determined the second individual was not involved in the homicide.
Following the investigation, 28-year-old Hakeem Jones of Northwest D.C. was arrested and charged with second-degree murder while armed.
The case remains under investigation.
