Teen robbed of moped at gunpoint in Northeast DC suspect arrested minutes later
WASHINGTON, DC – A teenager’s joyride on a newly purchased moped came to a sudden and terrifying halt Sunday afternoon when an armed man confronted him on a Northeast street and stole the vehicle at gunpoint. The suspect didn’t get far.
Just before 4 p.m. on Sunday, a young victim was riding along the 4500 block of Quarles Street NE when he was approached by a man who pulled a gun and demanded the moped. The suspect then took off on the stolen ride.
Officers responding to the armed carjacking quickly obtained a description of the moped and broadcast it citywide. Not long after, they tracked down both the suspect and the vehicle.
The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Markell Woodings of Southeast DC, was arrested and charged with Armed Carjacking (Gun), according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
The victim was not injured, and the moped was recovered. Authorities have not said whether the gun used in the incident was recovered or if additional charges are pending.
The swift arrest comes amid ongoing efforts to curb carjackings across the District, many of which involve juveniles or teenage victims. The case remains under active investigation.
