A volunteer dive team helped bring closure to a grieving family after recovering a dog that drowned in a Manasquan Lagoon earlier this month.
The Point Pleasant Beach Dive Team responded to an unusual and emotional call on June 8 after a family sought help locating their dog, which had drowned in one of the Manasquan lagoons.
According to the team, the family had already conducted an extensive search using a boat, jet ski, and drone but was unable to find the animal. Team members said the family contacted the dive unit after exhausting other options.
“Our hearts go out to them,” the dive team said in a statement. “Losing a pet this way is heartbreaking, and we are truly sorry they had to experience it.”
Search launched within hours
Following the request for assistance, Chief Diver Chet Nesley assembled a search team and developed a recovery plan after reviewing the lagoon with the family.
“After receiving the call, Chief Diver Chet Nesley mobilized a crew, and within hours six members of the Dive Team arrived on scene,” the team said.
Divers determined that full scuba gear would not be necessary because of the shallow water and favorable visibility conditions. Instead, team members used snorkeling equipment while searching around boats, docks, bulkheads, and other structures where the dog could have become trapped.
The search involved multiple volunteers covering separate sections of the lagoon.
Recovery brings closure to family
The dog was ultimately located after a team member spotted a shadow in the water near the bulkhead.
“While observing from the bulkhead, John spotted a shadow in the water and called Kim over to confirm the location,” the team said.
After confirming the discovery, divers carefully recovered the dog and returned it to shore.
“Once confirmed, Marty and Keith carefully recovered the dog and brought him safely back to the dock, where he was returned to his family,” the statement said.
Team members described the mission as emotionally difficult for everyone involved.
“This was an emotional day for everyone involved,” the dive team said. “While the outcome was heartbreaking, we are grateful that we were able to help bring closure to the family.”
Water safety reminder for summer
The incident prompted the organization to remind residents about the dangers associated with lagoons, rivers, docks, pools, and other bodies of water.
“This incident is also an important reminder that lagoons, canals, rivers, docks, pools, and open water can be extremely dangerous for pets, children, and adults,” the team said.
The group encouraged residents to closely supervise pets and children around water, use life jackets when appropriate, and remain aware of hazards near docks, boats, and bulkheads.
Addressing the family directly, the team added: “We are deeply sorry for your loss, and we were honored to help bring your beloved dog home.”
