Door disaster turns into winter rescue in upstate New York

Local business steps in as bitter cold leaves family without front door

Wawayanda, NY – As temperatures plunged into the teens, a damaged front door left a local family exposed to the winter cold until an unexpected act of generosity turned a crisis into a moment of relief.

State troopers and partner agencies responding to a call in the Town of Wawayanda discovered that a family’s main entry door had been badly damaged and could no longer keep out the cold. Officers learned the family did not have the financial means to replace the door as freezing conditions set in.

Word of the situation reached Builders FirstSource in Middletown, where employees moved quickly to help. The company built and donated a brand-new pre-hung exterior door, and one employee volunteered personal time to assist with installation.

With the new door in place, the family was able to remain warm and safe as extreme winter temperatures continued across the region. State Police said the effort prevented further hardship during dangerous cold conditions.

The New York State Police publicly thanked Builders FirstSource and its employees for their response, citing the act as an example of community support during a time of need.
