TOMS RIVER, N.J. — A fire severely damaged a two-story home on Madison Avenue in Toms River on Friday morning, though no injuries were reported. The fire broke out around 10:26 a.m., prompting a response from Toms River Fire Companies No. 1 and No. 2, along with East Dover Fire Company.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the side and rear of the residence. The fire was quickly upgraded to a second alarm, bringing in additional township fire companies and mutual aid. Crews used multiple handlines to bring the blaze under control.

Significant smoke, fire, and water damage were reported throughout the home, which has been deemed unsafe to occupy by the Toms River Building Department. The homeowner and her pet dog, who were both home at the time, were alerted by a smoke detector and safely exited the building.
The fire, determined to be accidental, was caused by a failure of electrical equipment in the sunroom, according to an investigation led by Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention Inspector William Herbst, in coordination with the Toms River Police Department.
The Red Cross of New Jersey is helping one person with emergency assistance for temporary lodging, food, clothing, and immediate needs.
