Trash truck right turn crash leaves e-bike rider dead in Petworth

WASHINGTON, DC — A Friday afternoon collision in Petworth turned deadly when a trash truck and an electric bicycle converged in the same lane approaching an intersection, leaving one rider dead and another critically injured as investigators worked to track down the truck involved.

The crash occurred at about 2:06 p.m. in the 4100 block of Kansas Avenue Northwest, not far from Georgia Avenue and Upshur Street. A man and a woman were found injured after being struck while riding together on an electric bicycle. DC Fire and EMS transported the woman, who was the passenger, to a hospital with critical injuries. The man operating the e-bike was pronounced dead at the scene after lifesaving efforts failed.

A preliminary assessment found that both the trash truck and the e-bike were traveling northeast on Kansas Avenue when they reached the intersection with Upshur Street at the same time. The truck turned right into the 900 block of Upshur Street when its front right section struck the e-bike. The truck left the scene after the impact.

Video analysis from the Real Time Crime Center helped investigators locate the trash truck in Hyattsville, Maryland. Detectives have identified the driver, and the investigation continues.

The deceased has been identified as 26-year-old Kenny Jimmenez Rivera of Northwest Washington.

Authorities are seeking information from anyone who may have knowledge of the crash and can contact (202) 727-9099 or text tips to 50411.
