MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A 77-year-old Silver Spring woman who was reported missing Sunday evening was struck and killed by a car in College Park just hours after she was last seen, officials confirmed Wednesday.

Asenakech Amdrufael Negewo was last seen around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Her disappearance was shared publicly on social media at approximately 9:30 p.m. that night by concerned individuals.

According to Maryland State Police, Negewo was hit by a Honda Civic while standing in the roadway on eastbound MD-198 near the ramp to I-95. The collision occurred shortly after 9:15 p.m., and she died at the scene.

The driver of the Honda Civic remained at the location following the incident. Authorities have not indicated any pending charges as of Wednesday.

Road closures were in place for approximately eight hours overnight while investigators from MSP’s Crash Team processed the scene.

Crash Team leads fatal pedestrian investigation

The Montgomery County Department of Police confirmed that Negewo’s death was connected to the earlier missing person alert. No explanation has been provided regarding how she ended up near the interstate ramp.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, including whether Negewo entered the roadway intentionally or was disoriented at the time.

As of Wednesday, officials have not released further information on the driver or whether speed or impairment were factors in the crash.
