Female Cape May County teacher indicted for aggravated sexual assault of student

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, N.J. — A Cape May County Grand Jury has indicted a local elementary school teacher on multiple charges related to an alleged sexual relationship with a student, authorities announced Tuesday.

Laura Caron, 34, of Cape May Court House, was indicted on charges of aggravated sexual assault (first degree), sexual assault (second degree), and endangering the welfare of a child (second degree). The indictment follows an extensive joint investigation by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and the Middle Township Police Department Major Crimes Unit.

Investigators allege that between 2016 and 2020, Caron engaged in an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student who was residing in her home. During that period, she was employed as a fifth-grade teacher at Middle Township Elementary School.

Prosecutor: Defendant held position of trust

“These allegations are deeply disturbing, particularly given the position of trust the defendant held in relation to the victim,” said Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland. “Our office remains committed to protecting the most vulnerable members of our community and will continue to aggressively investigate and prosecute those who violate that trust.”

If convicted, Caron faces a potential sentence of 10 to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison for the first-degree charge and 5 to 10 years for each second-degree charge.

The investigation remains active, and authorities are asking anyone with additional information to contact the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit at 609-465-1135 or submit tips anonymously online.
